The ‘Night of Museums’ is a French invention, which started in 1999 and became a Europe-wide movement in 2005. The objective of the event, successfully adopted in a number of European countries, is the same: to attract the largest number of visitors to museums and galleries.
The ‘Night of Museums’ in Budapest started seven years ago as light entertainment to celebrate the summer Solstice. At the time we set the objective of turning museums, similar to cafés, into community forums and places for get-togethers; venues offering a vibrant cultural life, with a wealth of ideas offering entertainment. It surpassed all expectations when, in a few years time, the event developed into a national festival mobilizing hundreds of thousands across the country.
