Sometimes, the museums in Budapest are not open on Mondays. So to avoid disappointments, it is always better to check the opening schedule (day and time of opening) before going there. Here's a little 'online guide to musuems in Budapest', hope it is handy for you! :)

AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM (Mezôgazdasági Múzeum) - Situated in the beautiful Vajdahunyad Castle in the City Park (Városliget), the museum is much more than just displays of crop production.

BARTÓK BÉLA MEMORIAL HOUSE (Bartók Béla Emlékház) - Memorial room with original furniture and Bartók's folk-art collection, photos, letters and notes on his life.

BUDAPEST HISTORY MUSEUM (Budapesti Történeti Múzeum) - Permanent exhibits include Gothic statues from the Royal Palace of Buda, Budapest in the Middle Ages and Prehistoric People. Exhibition pieces from Emma Deér's collection. Buda Castle, Buda I., Budavár Palace, "E" building.

CZÓBEL MUSEUM - Dedicated to the artist Béla Czóbel, showing his life and works. Tues-Sun 10am-6pm. Szentendre, Templom tér 1.

ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM (Néprajzi Múzeum) - Exhibitions on Hungarian lifestyles through history. Current exhibition is Huszka, Collector and Sketch Artist. An exhibition that marks the 150th anniversary of the famed teacher, writer and researcher of Hungarian folk art and ornamentation. Until October 30th. Newest release is the Clay Shamans and Stone Jaguars. A wonderful exhibition with over 300 artifacts from pre-Hispanic Latin American civilizations from Ecuador.

FOUNDRY MUSEUM (Öntödei Múzeum) - Amazing collection of moulds, stoves, and smithy equipment.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTER - Temporary exhibition "The Auschwitz Album", permanent exhibition planned for later this year.

HOUSE OF TERROR MUSEUM - The building was used by the Nazi Party in the 1940s and later became the headquarters of the Communist-era secret service. Now it is a memorial museum about both dictatorships.

HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GALLERY (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria) - Excellent introduction to Hungarian art since the foundation of the Hungarian state.

HUNGARIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM - Hungarian (Interactive) Railway Museum. Locomotives and trains at Central Europe's largest outdoor railway museum. There is much to do and many activities for children. Right along the tracks in the Eastern part of the city, there are various types and models of trains that guests can take in a closer look. The engine simulator offers a virtual experience of driving the most powerful Hungarian electric railway engine. Programs going every month. This month from the 17 - 18 of September is the 5th Central European Steam Engine Grand Prix International dining car convention.
On the 18th a Candle lit Express dinner.

MUSEUM OF FINE ART (Szépművészeti Múzeum) - Old Masters collection, one of the most impressive Spanish collections, French Impressionists and 19th-century Hungarians. Current exibition Dürer and His Contemporaries, Monumental Woodcuts by Outstanding Artists, Triumph of Emperor Maximilian I. Until October 9th. Permanent exhibition of "A New Era of the Spanish Collection", newly arranged and restored collection from the museum's private collection.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM - Beautiful newly renovated complex featuring a massive underground aquarium, a giant whale skeleton, fossils, stuffed animals and lots more.

PALACE OF ARTS (Művészetek Palotája) - A giant new arts complex, situated behind the National Theatre, providing a home for the Ludwig Museum and the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Choir and Musical Score Library.

POSTAL MUSEUM (Posta Múzeum) - Grand 1880s apartment building with frescos by Károly Lotz and a magnificent entrance way. The early telegraph machines will appeal to children.

MIKSA RÓTH MEMORIAL HOUSE - The former home of the Hungarian stained glass master is now a museum of his works. See the very brown-hued rooms where the genius of coloured glass lived.

STATUE PARK - Huge Socialist-realist statues of Marx, Lenin and other Communist-era figures relegated to a park on the edge of town. Daily, 10am-sunset. Direct buses leave from Deák tér daily from 11.00; look for the bus stop with the Szoborpark timetable. Buda XXII, Balatoni út/Szabadkai utca corner.

The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library - Wonderful library situated in the center of town.

TRANSPORT MUSEUM - Wonderful collection of old cars, motorbikes, reconstituted railway carriages, and the little ones will love its child-friendly set-up.
